This classic route generally circumnavigates Lancaster County offering scenic views from many angles.
Starting in Ephrata warm up on the rolling terrain as you make your way north toward Annville climbing over the Cornwall Ridge and passing the historic Cornwall Iron Furnace
along the way. From Annville, the course follows a southerly track filled with more Pennsylvania rollers as it meanders along the western edge of the county toward the Susquehanna River. Here you will pick up the Northwest River Trail,
a paved bikeway paralleling the river. Enjoy the scenery and generally level riding and think about all the fast vehicle traffic you're missing by staying off the adjacent highway. You will briefly join surface streets in Marietta and pass by a couple adult carbohydrate replenishment establishments should you be so inclined, before returning to the trail. This second stretch avoid the arduous climb on the shoulderless highway and takes you through a short tunnel through which the rail line once ran. You'll return to surface streets in Columbia and continue your downriver trek.
Enjoy the next few miles as you'll soon reach the river hills, starting with Turkey Hill itself, followed by the repetitive up and down terrain that makes the river hills near objects of dread among local cyclists. The namesake dairy operation is at the top of the first climb along with a pair of rather large wind turbines. (You will notice these as soon as you reach Columbia.)
The next control is in Conestoga (atop a hill of course). Your route is generally each and roller filled. After crossing a highway in New Providence, you'll scale the south ridge along White Oak Road and then follow the spin of the ridge all the way to Atglen. Enjoy the views. The city of Lancaster is in full view to your left on a clear day. It's all farmland to the right.
From Atglen, it's back over the ridge to the penultimate control in Compass, the eastern end of your loop. You'll head northwest back toward Ephrata with the final big climb over the Welsh Mountain. Just a few more rollers after that and you'll soon be finished.
