Saturday 8 November 2025
07:00 EST Start Time

Start Location

Bridge Street Bagel and Deli

67 Bridge St
Milford, NJ 08848
(908) 505-4077

The Deli opens at 6AM and serves a wide selection of breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and pastries. There is a public rest room and indoor seating.

Parking

Due to the limited parking spaces at the Deli, please do not park your car on the street there. Parking is available across the street in the Municipal Lot next to the church. Be sure to park by the creek, as far as possible from the Church.  Although signs say "2 Hour Parking" we've never heard of this being enforced. Nevertheless, park at your own risk.

Suggested parking locations for the start/finish are public places, with theft and vandalism a real possibility, especially in cities. Park during the event at your own risk. Please do not leave valuables in your car during the ride.

Lodging

Traveling far? Several motels are available in the area. Make your own reservations by calling the hotel directly.

Finish

After the ride there is generally a gathering of tired and thirsty randonneurs either at Pipolo's Pizza, or at Decendants Brewing, aka the Ship's Inn Check your brevet card for the exact finish controle designation. Pipolo's has a bit of a old school appearance inside, but  that's one of the endearing charms about the restaurant. The Ship Inn has an English pub atmosphere, serving craft-brewed ales, ciders, and home-made, British-inspired foods with locally sourced ingredients.

Ride Description

Starting from Bridge St Bagel in Milford NJ on the Delaware River, we'll be heading north to Johnsonburg, NJ and then turning west to Blairstown.  The northern extent of this route parallels portions of the Lackawanna Cutoff, a modern marvel in the early 1900's.

From Milford we begin our journey north through the quaint town of Little York, where we then begin a long gentle climb up Sweet Hollow Rd and a descent on Tunnel Rd to the Musconetcong River, which we'll ride along all the way to Port Murray, where the second major climb of the day awaits.

After dropping down to Great Meadows, where you can replenish your supplies, we'll ride along Shades of Death and pass Ghost Lake and the Fairy Hole.

Johnsonburg marks the northern extent of the route, and as we ride west, what looks like a small ridge is actually the man-made railroad bed of the Lackawanna Cut-off.  Many tunnels go through this rail bed, and we'll see a several of them after Blairstown. The historic centerpiece of this route will leave you awestruck as you ride past the Paulinskill Viaduct - when it was completed in 1910, it was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world.

As we head back into PA into Portland across the pedestrian bridge, the Lackawanna Cut-off RR Delaware Viaduct can be seen looking south down the river.

Upon arriving in Portland for a postcard control, and possible stop at Port 2 Flavors, we begin our return trip southbound along the Delaware to through Belvidere and Reigelsville, eventually southing at Lake Nokamixon, and then back up the Delaware gorge to the finish control in Milford at Descendants Brewing Co (Ship's Inn).

As shown in the route profile, there are several steep, extended climbs.  A triple or compact crank is highly recommended.
