Take a looping tour of Lancaster County with a strong motivation to finish. Long time riders may recognize bits and pieces of this route, but it has been at least seven years since with took a clockwise tour around Lancaster county.
Starting from the Victory Brewery in Parkesburg we head west gradually climbing along the spine of the Mine Ridge before dropping into New Providence and commencing the lumpy part of the route. A quick info control at a high point in Conestoga is followed by a quick drop to the Susquehanna at Safe Harbor which is the followed by a generally uphill trek to Mountville. A quick up and down over Chestnut Hill and the route checks into the first timed control at the Turkey Hill in Silver Spring.
From Silver Spring the route heads west through Maytown, Stacktown, and Conewago featuring mostly lumpy terrain and another info control at Conewago before turning north toward Lebanon County. The route to the last timed control in Annville is rolling, but riders will be generally gaining elevation the whole way. From Annville, riders are left with a 50-mile generally straight shot back to Parkesburg. Generally straight, but not generally flat. The Furnace Hills just after Cornwall and the Mine Ridge at Gap must be traversed before any talk of "it's all downhill from here" can be mentioned.
The final leg skirts Ephrata about midway through. There riders will find convenience stores and restaurants should they need to replenish. Check your supplies as there are few other options along the route ahead. The good news is that the route ahead is about as flat as it can get once you leave the Ephrata area and frequently aligns with a strong tailwind. One last little push to cross back over the Mine Ridge at Gap and it is all downhill to the finish where great food and drink options await. Be sure to check out the menu options before the ride so you'll plenty of time to decide what you'd like.
There are no major climbs in this route, but as many have observed, there are not a lot of flat stretches in Lancaster either. This route benefits from many years of refinement to smooth off as many of the rough edges as possible. It should be enjoyable. Regardless, a refreshing beer at the finish will go a long way toward making sure you leave with only good memories from the day.
